City’s enforcement agencies record an increase of more than 10 000 fines

City of Cape Town Metro Police and Traffic Service officers issued 69 224 fines during weekly operations, compared to 56 000 the previous week. Metro Police officers also arrested 46 suspects, which included 19 persons for the possession of or dealing in illegal substances. Several motorists were fined for transgressing the Alert Level 3 curfew regulations.
Traffic officers arrested 24 suspects, impounded six vehicles, 56 cell phones and issued more than 65 200 fines for road and vehicle safety transgressions.
During an illegal street racing and curfew operation held throughout the metropole on 28 January 2021, officers issued 297 fines for traffic offences such as reckless and negligent driving and disobeying road signs as well as 53 fines for breaking the curfew and 12 for not wearing masks.
On Sunday, 31 January 2021, officers issued 26 traffic fines at an illegal street race on Mosselbank Road, Durbanville. On the same day, 245 fines were issued during an enforcement operation held at Jutland Avenue and Hopeville Street, Gardens. The fines included 186 fines for disobeying a stop sign.
‘The blatant disregard for traffic signs and the safety of other road users seem to be on the increase and our enforcement agencies will intensify our efforts to keep the roads safe. The increase in the fines issued since last week shows that some motorists are willing to break the law and endanger the lives of innocent road users as well as pedestrians. The increase in fines also shows that traffic patrols are effective and we will not allow reckless drivers to rule the road,’ said the Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
Law Enforcement
Officers from the City’s Law Enforcement Advancement Plan(LEAP) assisted Nyanga SAPS with patrols in the Philippi area on Saturday, 30 January 2021. While busy searching a home at 10886 Zazulwane Crescent in Philippi, officers found an illegal pistol and 51 rounds in one of the bedrooms. The case was handed over to SAPS.
On Friday, 29 January 2021, during an integrated operation, LEAP officers assisted with a search and seizure warrant at 10 Fore Way, Nooitgedacht, Bishop Lavis where they found counterfeit money to the amount of R6500 hidden in the kitchen cabinet. The owner of the property was questioned, but could not provide an explanation for being in possession of the money. The suspect was detained at Bishop Lavis SAPS and charged for Unlawful Possession of Counterfeit Notes.
Metro Police
On Wednesday, 27 January 2021, officers patrolling the N2 and R300 received a call from the control room that security officers on the R300 caught two male suspects stealing copper cables between Hindle Road and Stellenbosch Arterial - direction Bellville. Officers apprehended the two suspects. Officers confiscated the copper cable and equipment used. The suspects, aged 31 and 34 were arrested for possession of stolen copper cable and damage to infrastructure and were detained at Delft SAPS.
A member of the K-9 Unit came to the rescue when Jackson sniffed out dagga in a vehicle on Saturday, 30 January 2021, in the Tygervalley area.
The Metro Police K-9 unit were on a routine patrol when they pulled over a vehicle on Charl Cronje Road, Tygervalley for disobeying a directional arrow. Upon interviewing the driver, officers had reason to belief that there could be illegal substances hidden in the vehicle, which the driver denied. K-9 Jackson was asked to assist and quickly gave an indication of substances under the driver seat, which led his handler to find 46 bankies of dagga and 36 bankies of mushrooms. The suspects, aged 34 and 38, were arrested and detained at Bellville SAPS.
‘Our continued crime prevention efforts are testament to the dedication and commitment of our officers. We would like to request the public and motorists to assist our Traffic Service, Law Enforcement and Metro Police Departments by reporting any suspicious, anti-social or criminal behaviour. Let’s stop crime before it happens,’ said Alderman Smith.
